Personal: John Dell, 42, is originally from the suburbs of Chicago and has over 20 years of sportswriting experience. His family moved to Northern Virginia when John was in high school. After high school, Dell matriculated to Averett College (now Averett University) in Danville, VA, and majored in English/Journalism and Communications, graduating in 1987. He played soccer for two years at Averett, basketball for one year, and was on the golf team for three years. He also was responsible for starting a baseball club that competed against other club teams from small colleges in the area. He started his professional newspaper career at the Eden Daily News in Eden, NC as sports editor of the five-day-a-week afternoon newspaper. After spending nearly three years at the Eden Daily News, he became a sportswriter at the Asheboro Courier-Tribune in Asheboro, NC. His duties included, but were not limited to, covering NASCAR, Charlotte Hornets basketball, ACC football and basketball, and high school sports. Dell spent nearly four years at the Asheboro Courier-Tribune. During those years, he was part of a three-man sports staff that won a North Carolina Press Association award in 1991 for a series on the Richard Petty family. Following his time at the Asheboro Courier-Tribune, he then moved to ACC Week Magazine, which was put out by the Winston-Salem Journal, where he spent three years editing and writing a 52-page weekly magazine that was published 45 times a year. He moved into the sports department at the Winston-Salem Journal in June of 1993. Dell started covering Winston-Salem State University and the CIAA and also became the golf writer for the Winston-Salem Journal. He has won numerous awards for his journalism and has been named CIAA sportswriter of the year five times since starting his coverage of CIAA athletics. In addition to covering the CIAA and WSSU, Dell also helps cover ACC men's basketball and ACC football. In January of 2004, he was one of four of the Winston-Salem Journal's sportswriters who covered the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston, TX. Dell has covered the Masters (PGA Tour) for the last nine years and several U.S. Open golf championships, including the recently completed 106th U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY. Dell was named the 2005 Sportswriter of the Year for the State of North Carolina by the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame. The hall of fame annually names a sportswriter and sportscaster of the year from each state, and the 2005 award was Dell's first such honor. Dell has been married to Laura Gerardi-Dell since July of 1993, and the couple has little girl, Allison Marie, who is three years old, and a one-year-old son, Jeffrey. Dell's hobbies include playing golf, as he is rumored to be a 10 handicap golfer, and watching the Chicago Cubs, something he's done since he was about eight years old.
