Media Coverage Of WSSU Athletics

 

Winston-Salem State University Athletics are a very popular topic of conversation in the Piedmont Triad, the nation, and the world and the Rams and Lady Rams generate a great deal of excitement for multitudes of fans that keep informed of their successes and follow their victories both inside and outside of the athletic arena.

 

In addition to internal media coverage provided by the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations through the efforts of Assistant Director of Athletics for Media Relations, Chris Zona and Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations, Trevin Goodwin the WSSU Athletic programs are covered by a variety of Media Outlets.

 

News and updates on WSSU Athletics are routinely provided in print by the Winston-Salem Journal and the Winston-Salem Chronicle, the Greensboro News-Record, the Charlotte Observer and the Raleigh News and Observer.

 

The Winston-Salem Journal is Winston-Salem, NC's only daily newspaper. "The Journal" is a Media General newspaper and is one of eight North Carolina daily newspapers owned by the Media General group of Richmond, VA. The Winston-Salem Journal's coverage of WSSU Athletics is spearheaded by sportswriter John Dell.

 

The Winston-Salem Chronicle is a community newspaper that is published weekly. The Chronicle strives to be the definitive choice for African-American and community news for the Piedmont Triad. WSSU Athletics are covered by Sports Director Anthony Hill who routinely follows the Rams and Lady Rams.

 

In addition to print coverage, WSSU Athletics are routinely covered on television by four local stations. The Rams and Lady Rams are featured on WFMY-TV2, WGHP-TV8, WXII-TV 12, and WUPN-TV48. As well, the Rams have appeared on the MBC Network under the production assistance of Urban Sports and Entertainment Group, have appeared live on Black Entertainment Television (BET) in a nationally-televised football game as well as annually appearing on ESPN and ESPN Regional television.

 

WSSU Athletics are routinely covered on at least six local radio stations on both the AM and FM dial. WSSU is covered by WGBT-FM (94.5), WSNC-FM (90.5), WKZL-FM (107.5), WJMZ-FM (102.1), WQMG-FM (97.1) and ESPN Radio 1590 AM. All Ram football and basketball games can also be heard on WSNC-90.5 FM with Maurice "Big Mo" Stanfield and L.A. Batchelor, the "Voices of the Rams" calling all the action.

 

Mission Statement:

The mission of WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations is to build informed support of WSSU and its Athletics Department by creating and communicating the University's key messages to targeted audiences, while advancing the image of WSSU on the local, regional and national marketplaces.

 

Vision Statement:

The vision of the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations is to provide comprehensive strategic direction to the Winston-Salem State University Department of Athletics.

 

As WSSU seeks to differentiate and reposition itself as a leader among nationally competitive, NCAA Division I Athletics-sponsoring institution of higher education the Office of Athletic Media Relations will provide brand-centered communications support through fostering relationships with student-athletes, coaches and athletic administrators as well as with local, regional and national media members and other WSSU constituents.

 

Philosophy Statement: 

Through the cultivation of interpersonal relationships with staff members of the WSSU Department of Athletics, student-athletes, and all WSSU constituents (customers) the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations will continue to build towards evolving into the premier provider of publicity and exposure to the WSSU Department of Athletics, the most highly visible marketing arm of the University as a whole.  Through the exposure of coaches, athletes and the individual athletic programs, based upon a cornerstone of trust and respect for all consumers of WSSU athletic news and publicity, the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations will adapt to the ever-changing demands of promoting an Athletic Department at the NCAA's highest level of intercollegiate competition (NCAA Division I).
