WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- The Winston-Salem State University Rams will make their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional after being selected as the #6 seed in the region.
The Rams will take on Seton Hill University, the #1 seed in the region, in the opening round of the tournament. Game time is set for 11 AM on Thursday.
WSSU will enter the NCAA Atlantic Regional with a 34-19 overall record, and winning back-to-back CIAA Titles. Winston-Salem State is in only its second year of baseball after a 30-year hiatus at the University.
The Griffins, 44-9 overall, is coming off a 2-1 showing in the WVIAC Tournament after rolling through the WVIAC regular season with a 30-4 record in conference play earning their third straight WVIAC Northern Division title.
West Chester University will be the number two seed in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional. The Golden Rams earned the PSAC's automatic bid with a 10-0 victory over Kutztown in the PSAC Championship Game. West Chester also won the PSAC East with a 16-8 record and finished the regular season with a 39-10 record. West Chester will meet number five seed Shepherd University in the first round. Shepherd (30-19) enters the tournament with the automatic bid from the WVIAC. The other first round matchup will see third seed and PSAC runner up Kutztown (35-17) taking on PSAC West Champion and fourth seed Mercyhurst (38-15).
Kutztown will host the tournament at Owl Field at Ted Palka Park in West Lawn, PA beginning on Thursday. Owls Field is comprised of elevated terraces on both the right and left field lines, which is designed for "lawn chair" viewing. There are no bleachers in the stadium, so fans attending the tournament are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and/or blankets for a comfortable view of the games. Owls Field is welcoming to left-handed batters with dimensions down the right field line at 305 feet. The field is 360 feet in left field, 385 in left-center, 415 in center and 375 in right-center.
Ticket prices are as follows: $5.00 Student/Senior, $10.00 Adult Daily, $15.00 Tournament Pass Student/Senior and $30.00 Tournament Pass Adult. The Tournament Pass will be available on the first day of the tournament only.
The winner of the Atlantic Regional will advance to the 2012 NCAA Division II Baseball Championships, hosted by Mt Olive at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, NC. The tournament will run from May 26-June 2. The Atlantic Region Champion will take on the West Region Champion at 1 PM on Saturday, May 26.
