The Winston-Salem State University Rams came up one run short in their effort to pull off the upset of #1 seed, Seton Hill, as the Rams fell 3-2 to the Griffins in the opening round of the NCAA DII Atlantic Regional Baseball Tournament on Thursday.
WSSU got on the scoreboard early, as leadoff hitter, Travis Moore, opened the game with a single to center field, followed by a Paco Martin single through the right side. German Reyes sacrificed Moore to third on a bunt and CIAA Player of the Year, Aaron Jones, single to right field scoring Moore to give the Rams an early 1-0 lead.
Seton Hill answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning, capitalizing on three hits and a walk.
The Rams were able to tie the score in the third inning as Paco Martin and German Reyes each singled and later, Brandon Harrison fielder's choice scored Martin.
Seton Hill regained the lead in the fourth inning as an errors and subsequent double pushed the Griffins ahead for good.
WSSU had a chance to tie the game in the final inning, but a base running miscue ended the game. On the final play of the game, Travis Moore grounded to the Seton Hill relief pitcher, who bobbled the ball, allowing Moore to reach first. WSSU's Dominique Fitzgerald moved to third and missed the "stop" signal by coach Kevin Ritsche. The SH pitcher faked a throw to first, then rifled the ball home to nip Fitzgerald for the final out.
Travis Moore went 2 for 5 with a run scored, while Paco Martin and Aaron Jones each were 2 for 4. Martin scored a run, while Jones had WSSU's only RBI on the afternoon.
Sheldon Johnson picked up the loss for WSSU, going 8.0 innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs, while striking out nine.
The Winston-Salem State Rams will take on Shepherd University in an elimination game at 11:00 AM at Owls Field in West Lake, PA.
