WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Winston-Salem State's Levi Grassley singled home German Reyes in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Rams a thrilling 9-8 win over Fairmont State in the nightcap of a double header at BB&T Ballpark on Friday night.
The win moves WSSU to .500, at 4-4 on the season, while Fairmont State University of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, falls to 0-1.
Paco Martin went two for five with two runs scored, while Rafael Gonzalez finished two for three with one run cored and a game high four runs batted in. Chris Constantine went one for one with two runs batted in, and Levi Grassley and Anthony Nutall each finished one for four.
Gonzalez had a two run home run and Nutall hit a solo homer, each taking place in the Rams second inning.
WSSU committed a season high seven errors in the win.
Winston-Salem State carried a 8-5 lead into the seventh inning before allowing one run in the eighth and two in the ninth to set up the thrilling finish.
In WSSU's ninth, German Reyes walked and was advanced to second on Aaron Jones' sac bunt. Rafael Gonzalez and Chris Constantine were walked, bringing Levi Grassley to the plate for his heroics.
Michael Drye picked up the win for Winston-Salem State. Scott Wells pitched 4.1 innings, giving up six hits and three earned runs while striking out three. Jordan Carlton pitched 1.2 innings, while John Markley threw 2.0 innings and Seth Mahaffey going 0.1 innings.
Nick Hallis led the Fighting Falcons going three for five with four runs scored, while Randy Tallhamer finished two for four with three runs batted in and one run scored.
Tyler Lucas picked up the loss for Fairmont State, going just 1.2 innings, giving up five walks and an earned run.
WSSU will host WVIAC member, Concord University at 3:00 pm on Sunday at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem.
