WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Winston-Salem State pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of three Virginia State errors en route to a 6-2 win on Sunday at BB&T Ballpark.
The win gives the Rams (30-8, 13-1 CIAA) the three game weekend sweep over the Trojans (16-12, 9-6 CIAA) heading into the last week of the regular season before the CIAA Tournament.
Winston-Salem State would get on the scoreboard early, scoring in the bottom half of the first inning. Travis Moore walked then promptly stole second base. Not done yet he took third base on steal putting a runner 90 feet away from the plate. He would score on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Aaron Jones.
The Rams Kyle Boraski was dominate on the mound for the Rams as he kept the Trojans off the base paths and had accumulated five strikeouts through the first three innings, without allowing a hit.
WSSU would put some breathing room between them and Virginia State as they would score twice in the third inning. The inning started with back to back doubles by German Reyes and Aaron Jones, with Reyes scoring. Jones would advance to third base on a Rafael Gonzalez fly ball to right field, and would eventually score on a Tyler Hickernell single through the left side, giving the Rams a 3-0 lead.
Virginia State was held hitless until the fifth inning when they got three hits, but the Trojans were held runless as Boraski was on his game on the mound for WSSU.
Ryan Smith would come on to pitch for WSSU in the seventh inning, and the Trojans would finally be able to solve th Rams pitching after being stymied for six innings. They would plate two runs on three hits, and were helped out by a Ram defensive error to pull to within one run, at 3-2.
But the Rams would not stop fighting, and with two outs, began a rally that would pay off with a big run. Back to back singles from Levi Grassley and Rafael Gonzalez would put runners in scoring position. Grassley would steal third, before Tyler Hickernell walked to load the bases. Conner Andrus would reach on an error by the Trojans second baseman, scoring Levi Grassley.
WSSU would get two more insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, on a Brandon Harrison run score on a passed ball, and a rbi single by Rafael Gonzalez scoring German Reyes.
Ryan Smith would shut down the Virginia State Trojans in the ninth inning giving the Rams the 6-2 victory.
Aaron Jones continued the swing a hot bat for the Rams going two for four with a run scored and two runs batted in. Rafael Gonzalez went two for five with a rbi, while Paco Martin finished two for three. Tyler Hickernell and Conner Andrus each went one for four with a run batted in. German Reyes was one for four with two runs scored, while Brandon Harrison was one for five with a run scored and Travis Moore went one for three with a run scored.
Kyle Boraski pitched six skillful innings, allowing five hits and no runs, while striking out seven. Ryan Smith came on in relief and pitched the final three innings allowing four hits and two runs with two strikeouts.
WSSU will travel to Cary, NC tomorrow to face Saint Augustine's University in a makeup game, before traveling to Brevard on Tuesday for a 6:00pm contest.
