PETERSBURG, VA - Brandon Harrison's scorching hit to shortstop was too much for the VSU Trojans to handle and German Reyes scored on the play to give the Rams a 6-5 win in 10 innings to propel WSSU into the championship game on Saturday.
The win moves the WSSU Rams record to 36-8, and it gives head coach Kevin Ritsche his 101st victory at the helm of the Rams program.
Virginia State scored first with a run in the opening inning. Joshua Markins hit a single to the left side to get on base. First baseman Percy Evans followed with a RBI double to score Markins and take an early lead.
The Rams responded in the second inning with two runs of their own. WSSU held Virginia State scoreless from the second to the eighth inning. The Trojans allowed one additional run in third and two more runs in the eighth. Going into the ninth, VSU trailed 5-1.
In the top of the ninth, the Trojans started a rally with back to back doubles from Colton Gunn and Vernon Vaughan. Gunn scored off a single from Corey Grant. Markins smacked a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Vaughan. Evans tied the game with a clutch 2-RBI single, which scored Grant and Nicholas Christopher. WSSU eventually got out of the ninth, but not before the Trojans produced four runs and four hits to send the game into a 10th inning.
Despite the heroic comeback, Virginia State failed to score in the top of the 10th. In the bottom of the inning, the Rams managed to load the bases. Brandon Harrison hit a shot to the shortstop, causing an error and allowing German Reyes to come home from third.
