WINSTON-SALEM. NC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams fell behind early and could not overcome five errors, as the lost 15-4 to the #4 Mount Olive Trojans in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem.
The Trojans jumped out on the Rams early, for the third game in a row, helped out by two errors, scored three first inning runs.
But the Rams were able to bounce back, and after singles by Leland Clemmons and Ray Crawford, Rafael Gonzalez singled through the middle of the infield scoring both Clemmons and Crawford, cutting the Mount Olive lead to 3-2.
The Trojans continued to take advantage of WSSU miscues, and plated three more runs in the second inning on two more Rams errors.
Winston-Salem state bounced back in the fourth, after Colby Keane and Leland Clemmons led off the inning with hits and Gabian Mundo was hit by a pitch, Ray Crawford came to the plate and singled to left, scoring Keane.
Mount Olive would score two runs in the fifth, one in the sixth, and would finally break the game wide open in the seventh inning with six runs.
The rams were able to get one last run in the bottom of the seventh, s Levi Grassley would score on a Mount olive wild pitch.
The Rams used seven pitchers on the afternoon, as Alex Grubb (0-1) took the loss. WSSU pitchers also gave up nine walks on the day and surrendered 19 hits. Gunner Kines picked up the win for Mount Olive (1-0).
WSSU was led at the plate by Ray Crawford, who had an excellent day hitting, going four for five with one rbi and one run scored. Gavin Culler finished two for four, and Leland Clemmons went two for five with a run scored. Rafael Gonzalez went two for five, and led the Rams with two rbi's on the day.
DeAndre Allen, Cody Britt, Willi Martin led Mount Olive with three hits each, and every started had at least one hit. Allen led the Trojans with three rbi's, with Britt, Chase Edwards, Zak Orrison and Jay Gonzalez each collecting two rbi's.
