WSSU RAMS PICK UP FIRST WIN WITH 4-1 VICTORY OVER #14 MILLERSVILLE UNIVERSITY

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University Rams baseball team picked up their first win of the season behind a solid pitching effort from Wesley Halsabeck and a three rbi night from Conner Andrus, as the Rams defeated the #14 ranked Millersville University Marauders, 4-1 at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem Friday evening.

With the win, the Rams move to 1-3 on the new year while Millersville drops to 0-1 on the season.

Winston-Salem State got on the board in the second inning after Gavin Culler drew a walk followed by a Ray Crawford single. Conner Andrus then doubled down the left field line, scoring Culler to give WSSU the early 1-0 lead.

The Rams would strike again in the third inning, as Leland Clemmons single to start the inning then promptly stole second base. Gavin Culler then walked, before Clemmons would steal third and Culler second. Conner Andrus would doubled to center field scoring both Clemmons and Culler, giving WSSU a 3-0 lead.

Wesley Halsabeck (1-0) was master throughout the evening, as he would go six innings surrendering just four hits with four strikeouts and just one walk.

Although WSSU seemed to be cruising along, the bullpen would provide some angst in the eighth inning, as J.R. Wright would give up a single and then hit two batters forcing the bases loaded.

But the Rams' Devin McLemore would come in from the bullpen and force a double play to get WSSU out of the inning unscathed.

Winston-Salem State would pick up an ever important insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth inning, after a Jacob Barber and Alex Grubb singles. Scott Well would hit into a fielder's choice, advancing Barber to third with two outs. Gavin Culler would then single to right field scoring Barber and giving the Rams a 4-0 lead heading into the ninth inning.

Millersville would manage to finally push across a run in the ninth, but Devin McLemore would shut them down for the 4-1 victory.

Gavin Culler led the Rams with a perfect two for two night while scoring twice and also picking up a rbi, while Conner Andrus would have a big night going two for three with three rbi's and two doubles on the evening. Leland Clemmons finished going one for three with a run scored, and Jacob Barber finished one for two with a run scored. Gabian Mundo and Alex Grubb each picked up a hit.

Joining Wesley Halsabeck on the mound, Eric Corlett pitched 0.2 innings with one walk, and J.R. Wright pitched 0.2 innings giving up a hit while also hitting two batters. Devin McLemore (1) picked up his first save, after going 1.2 innings allowing one hit, one run one walk and striking out one.

For Millersville, Kurt Seiders went two for five with a rbi, and Zach Stone went two for four to lead the Marauders. Dan Stoltzfus and David Pine each had one hit.

The two teams will face each other again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem.
