Rams Homer Their to 17-8 Win Over the University of the Sciences

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (11-6) broke out their offense when the team took a dominating 17-8 win over the University of the Sciences Devils (3-7), Monday evening. The Rams took the win behind a powerful hitting performance that included three home runs in the game.

As a team, the Rams had one of their best hitting performances of the season when the team took their dominating win over the Devils. The Rams were led by senior outfielder John Garcia who totaled six runs batted in (RBI) while going three-for-five at the plate with a double and a home run. Freshman shortstop Wellington Guzman added a four-for-five batting effort with two home runs, four runs scored, and three RBI. Junior second base Rashad Stewart added a four-for-four batting performance with three runs scored and an RBI.

The Rams had some big scoring efforts in the game. After allowing an opening inning run to the Devils, the Rams answered with five second-inning runs. Junior first base Michael Moorehead kicked things off with an RBI triple to score Guzman. Stewart followed the effort with an RBI single to score Moorehead. It was then that Garcia hit a three-run home run to give the Rams a 5-1 lead. The Rams followed the effort with a huge five-run third inning as well. After allowing a third inning run to the Devils, the Rams returned to their offensive ways with five third inning runs of their own. Guzman opened things with a solo home run. It was followed by an RBI sacrifice fly from junior centerfielder Randy Norris to score Moorehead again. Garcia added an RBI single to score Stewart and sophomore Brandon Ford hit an RBI triple to score Garcia. Ford would score on his own when a Devils wild pitch allowed a score from Ford. Guzman added another solo home run in the fourth inning to leave the Rams ahead, 10-2. The Devils got back into the game in a big way with a grand slam home run in the fifth inning. The Rams also added five fifth inning runs. Guzman opened things with an RBI double to score junior designated hitter Michael Murphy. Stewart added an RBI single to score Moorehead. Garcia added a two-RBI double to score Norris and Stewart. After allowing a pair of seventh inning runs to the Devils, the Rams added a seventh inning run of their own when Moorehead scored on a Devils throwing error to leave the score, 17-8.

WSSU senior Landon Biggs (2-1) took the pitching victory for the Rams. He started the game and went four innings with four runs allowed (four earned) and three strikeouts.

With the win, the Rams improve to 11-6. The Rams will return to action tomorrow when the team hosts the College of Saint Rose Golden Knights. The Rams are set for a 5:00 p.m. first pitch at BB&T Ball Park.
