CHARLOTTE, NC -- The Winston-Salem State University Rams Men's Basketball team was picked to finish third in the CIAA's Southern Division when the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced the predicted order of finish for the 2011-12 season, at the annual basketball press conference at the Charlotte Convention Center.
Winston-Salem State was chosen third behind Shaw University and Johnson C. Smith, and ahead of Fayetteville State University, Livingstone College and Saint Augustine's College, as voted on by the CIAA men's basketball coaches association.
The Rams are coming off of a 19-8 season under head coach, Bobby Collins, who led his team to the CIAA Southern Division crown, before falling in the first round of the CIAA Basketball Tournament. WSSU eventually earned a NCAA Division II Playoff berth where they fell to Shaw University.
The Rams return just two starters and seven letter winners from last season's team, and will be looking to try to finish what they started a year ago – to win the CIAA Crown.
Winston-Salem State's Lamar Monger was chosen as an All-CIAA preseason selection entering his final season for the Rams. Monger (6-1, 185, G, Sr, Murfreesboro, NC/Hertford HS) was second on the team in scoring a year ago, averaging 12.8 points per game, and pulling down 3.1 rebounds per game. He led the team in scoring on eight different occasions, and in steals, 11 times. Monger scored in double figures in 17 of WSSU's 27 games last season.
Bobby Collins also retooled his staff after the departures of his assistant coaches after last season. Collins has added James Wilhelmi, who spent last season as an assistant coach at North Alabama, and Marseilles Brown. Brown is most well-known for helping the Pirates upset Iowa State in the first round of the 2001 NCAA tournament. Brown most recently had been a pro trainer for Ganon Baker Basketball in Columbia, S.C. Collins will also have Theo Howard, an assistant vice chancellor for campus life at WSSU, as a volunteer assistant.
The WSSU Rams will open up the 2011-12 season on November 11th at the CE Gaines Center, when they host Talladega College at 7:00 P.M.
