Winston-Salem State Winning Streak Hits 11 Games
WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Sophomore WyKevin Bazemore and freshman Michel-Ofik Nzege scored 16 points each to lead #17 Winston-Salem State to a 89-76 win over Chowan University at the CE Gaines Center on the WSSU campus.
With the win, WSSU moves to 12-2 overall and 5-0 in CIAA play, pushing their winning streak to 11 games. The Chowan Hawks fall to 5-8 overall and 0-5 in CIAA play.
Winston-Salem State started quick with some hot shooting from Justin Glover, Marcus Wells and Michel-Ofik Nzege as the Rams jumped out to a 8-0 lead. WSSU and Chowan would trade baskets for the next few minutes, before a, 11-5 run by the Hawks would give them their first lead of the night at 22-21 with 9:54 in the first half.
The Hawks would increase their lead to four points at 27-23, before the Rams would battle back to play virtually even the rest of the half, before WSSU's Wakefield Ellison would hit a long 3-pointer at the first half buzzer to give the Rams a 42-40 lead heading into the locker room at the break.
Both teams would come back in the second half determined and played even throughout, until a 7-2 run by WSSU would give them a slight cushion at 57-22 with 12:55 to play.
Chowan would sink a three to get back to with two points, but the Rams defense and ability to limit the Hawks to one shot, would pay off as they would strep on the gas pedal and race out to a ten point lead with 8:07 to play at 68-58.
Seven points would be as close as Chowan could cut into the WSSU lead and the Rams continued their late onslaught, and would take their largest lead of the game of 15 points, three times late, and last with 00:38 remaining.
The Rams would go on to the 89-76 victory.
Winston-Salem State made 17 of 21 free throws on the evening, and out rebounded the Hawks, 39-25. The Rams also held advantages in points in the pain (58-46); points off of turnovers (26-14); 2nd chance points (30-22); and bench points (40-29).
The WSSU Rams' WyKevin Bazemore and Michel-Ofik Nzege led the charge for WSSU with 16 points each, while adding seven and six rebounds respectively. Justin Glover added 11 points, and Victor Holloway, Kimani Hunt and Wakefield Ellison each scored 10 points. Holloway also pulled down three rebounds and Ellison added four boards. Maurice Nash had another strong game with eight points and seven rebounds. Marcus Wells dished out five assists and Bazemore led the team with three steals.
Kortez Smith came off the bench for Chowan to lead them in scoring with 18 points, while Jerry Farley added 15 points and six rebounds and Chris Williams finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Ashante Ross and Ricky Lamb each finished with 11 points.
Winston-Salem State will close out its three game home stand on Monday night, when they host the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University at 7:30 pm at the CE Gaines Center.
