WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Marquez Jones scored a career high 31 points and the Rams raced out to a 57-44 halftime lead en route to a 102-84 win over Notre Dame College (Ohio) at the Big House Gaines Tip-Off Classic.
Both teams went back and forth for the first part of the beginning half, before 11-2 run midway through the half extended the Rams lead to 11 at 37-26.
But it was the Marquez Jones show from the time he stepped foot on the court, as he connected on 6 of 9 three's in the first half to score 24 in the opening period.
Notre Dame was trying to keep close during Jones' barrage of three's with the help of Lawrence DeArmond's 13 first half points.
The second half was more of the same for the #21 ranked WSSU Rams, as they began the half with a 17-4 run to blow the game wide open.
The Rams extended their lead to a game high 29 points at the 7:09 mark, leading the Falcons 89-60.
The scrappy NDC Falcons would not give in, and they ended the game on a run of their won to close the gap to 13 points, twice in the late going before WSSU was able to secure the 18 point win.
WSSU dominated the bench scoring, with a 57-18 advantage, and also led 21-10 in second chance points.
Winston-Salem State had four players in double figures, with Marquez Jones pacing the team. Jones came off the bench to make 10 of 16 shots, including 6 of 11 from behind the three point arc for his 31 points. Preston Ross added 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Victor Holloway added 14 points and eight rebounds. Wykevin Bazemore chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.
Notre Dame College was paced by Lawrence DeArmond's 25 points, while Jarvis Huntley added 15 points and Tyree Gaiter added 10 points.
Winston-Salem State will face off with Concord University at 8:00 p.m. tomorrow at the CE Gaines Center.
