Preston Ross,III and Marquez lead the way with 26 points each
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University Rams used a strong first half to race out to a 14 points halftime, and held on for a 76-67 win over St. Augustine's University Saturday night at the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
The win moves the WSSU Rams to 10-7 overall, 5-2 in the CIAA and 1-0 in the Southern Division, while the Falcons of St. Augustine's fall to 10-5 overall, 3-3 in the CIAA and 0-1 in the Southern Division.
Winston-Salem State wasted no time in setting the tone for the night as they used a 12-2 run to start the game on shots by Preston Ross, Tyre Desmore and a dunk by Brian Okam to jump out in front, before the Falcons knew what hit them.
St. Augustine's settled down and got right back in the game and pulled to within one point at 15-14 at the 12:37 mark.
But once again the Rams kept the pressure on the visitors and the hot shooting from guard Marquez Jones, the CIAA's third leading scorer, pushed the WSSU lead back out to nine points at 30-21 with 6:34 remaining in the first half.
The Falcons scraped their way back into the game once again, but Winston-Salem State University would use a powerful 16-2 run over the final four minutes of the half to take a commanding 46-32 lead into the locker room at the half.
Winston-Salem State kept their foot on the gas pedal for much of the second half, and the Rams 14 points lead halftime lead ballooned to 21midway through the second half as a baseline two handed dunk from Preston Ross put the Rams up 63-42.
WSSU would maintain the big lead for the most of the remainder of the game and held an 20 point lead at the final media timeout of the game, 73-53.
St. Augustine's would not quit, and tried to make a game of it over the final four minutes, cutting the Rams lead down to single digits, but on this night Winston-Salem State would be able to hold off the Falcons for the final of 76-67.
Preston Ross scored 26 points to go with eight rebounds, and Marquez Jones also added 26 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and two ste4als to lead Winston-Salem State. Tyre Desmore added eight points, two assists and a steal and Kerry Campbell shipped in six points, five assists and a steal. WyKevin Bazemore finished with four points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals, and Brian Okam added four points, three rebounds, two assists and three blocked shots for WSSU.
St. Augustine's had three players finish in double figures with Joel Kindred's 16 points and seven rebounds and three steals leading the way. Jonathan Crawley added 13 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots, while Tashaun Stockdale finished with 10 points.
Winston-Salem State University will travel to Raleigh, NC on Wednesday night for another key CIAA Southern Division contest, as they take on the Bears of Shaw University at 8:00 p.m.
