Rams Outlast Golden Bulls in Overtime, 117-109

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Ameer Jackson finished with 26 points to lead six WSSU players in double-figures, as the Rams outlasted the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls, 117-109 in overtime, Wednesday evening at the CE Gaines Center.

With the win, WSSU improves to 12-13 overall, 7-8 in the CIAA and 5-4 in the Southern Division.  JCSU falls to 10-15 overall, 6-9 in the CIAA and 3-6 in the Southern Division.

The WSSU Rams started quickly and jumped out to the early lead before the Golden Bulls were able to get their first advantage at 28-26, on a Christian Williams jump shot.

The Golden Bulls relied on the hot hand of Robert Davis, who scored 26 first half points, to keep them close, but the Rams were able to run out to a 55-46 halftime lead in front of a sold out and electric Gaines Center crowd.

Two minutes into the second half, JCSU had rallied back to tie the game, but behind the hot shooting of Ameer jackson , Robert Colon and Jamel McAllsiter, the Rams quickly regained control of the game and were able to extend the lead.

Robert Davis kept the hot hand in the second half, and virtually carried the Golden Bulls on his back, scoring 21 second half points, erasing the Rams advantage, and Johnson C. Smith used a late 13-4 run to get back into the game and Davis' three pointer with 19 second left, would force overtime.

In the overtime period, WSSU outscored Johnson C. Smith, 18-10, and William Crandell scored six of his 12 points, as the Rams pulled away from the Golden Bulls, and never looked back.

For the game, WSSU's bench outscored JCSU, 72-16, and led in fast break points, 15-8. The Rams also outscored the Golden Bulls 29-22 in points off of turnovers and 42-36 in points in the paint.

The Rams were led in scoring by Ameer Jackson, who scored 26 points, grabbed three rebounds, dished out four assists and had three steals. Robert Colon added 22 points and Michael Adams had 14 points and three rebounds.  William Crandell added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Carlos Rankins also added 12 points.  Julius Barnes chipped in 10 points and four assists.

Johnson C. Smith was led by Robert Davis, who finished with a career-high 46 points, six rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Christian Kirchman finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Gabon Williams added 13 points and eight rebounds, and Christian Williams scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.  Cayse Minor added 12 points and six rebounds.

With tonight's win, WSSU secures the third seed in the southern Division, and will not play until Thursday during next week's CIAA Tournament.  The Rams can secure the second seed, with a win on Saturday at Livingstone, should they beat the Blue Bears by more than four points.
