WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-1) could not quite find the answers that they needed in an 89-77 loss to the Concord Mountain Lions (2-0), Saturday evening. After taking an early lead, the Rams faded late and could not get back into the game in a hard-fought loss.
The Rams took the loss in spite of a tenacious overall effort. As a team, the Rams shot a solid 44.2% (23-of-52) in the game, but they struggled to stop Concord, who shot 60.4% (29-of-48) in the game. WSSU sophomore guard Robert Colon led the way for the Rams with 24 points in the game. Junior forward William Crandell added 22 points with six rebounds while junior forward Jamel McAllister added 10 points with a team-high seven rebounds. McAllister also had three assists.
In the early going, the Rams took control of the game with a 17-9 run after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Julius Barnes with 11:25 left in the first half. Concord would work their way back into the game, cut the WSSU lead down to just two points, 17-15, but the Rams would stay in control of the game. After pushing their lead back to seven points, the Rams fell victim to a strong push late by the Mountain Lions. A pair of Concord free throws with 2:10 left in the first half gave the Rams their first deficit of the game. In the final seconds, Concord kept their run going and left the Rams trailing, 38-34 at halftime.
After taking a deficit into the locker room at halftime, the Rams worked their way back into the lead, but the team faded late in the loss. The Rams reclaimed their lead early when Colon hit a pair of free throws to leave the Rams on top, 43-42 with 17:46 left to play. The two teams would go on to trade leads until midway through the half with 71-64 with 8:15 left to play. The seven-point cushion proved to be too much for the Rams to overcome as Concord pulled way late for the victory. The Rams would cut their deficit down to a few as five points, 75-70 with 3:51 left to play. However, the Rams could not get back into the game and ended the day with the tough loss.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 1-1 on the season. The team will return to action, Friday when the team heads to Raleigh, N.C. to take on Morehouse in a 6:00 p.m. game.
