Rams Take Heartbreaking 71-69 Loss to Fayetteville State

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-14, 2-7 CIAA) had their hearts broken in a 71-69 loss to the Fayetteville State Broncos (5-14, 4-5 CIAA), Wednesday. The Rams held a 69-68 lead with just under two seconds left, but an FSU three-pointer at the buzzer sent the Rams home with the loss, Wednesday evening.

The Rams took the loss in spite of some tremendous performances both individually and as a team. For the Game, the Rams shot a solid 46.2% (24-of-52) in the game, including shooting just 28.6% (6-of-21) from the three-point line in the game. WSSU sophomore guard Robert Colon and junior forward William Crandell both turned in 17-point scoring performances in the game while junior guard Derrick Farquharson added 12 points and junior forward Jamel McAllister added 10 points with 11 rebounds.

As befitting a terrific Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) game, there were strong momentum shifts on both ends of the court for literally all 40 minutes of play. The game began with a great beginning for the Rams. After allowing the Broncos to go ahead 8-2 in the opening minutes, the Rams kicked into gear when a Colon lay-up with 7:28 left in the half gave the Rams a 31-20 lead. From there, the Rams struggled to keep an aggressive Bronco squad at bay. In the final minutes, the Rams were held scoreless for the final four minutes of the first half and took a 38-35 deficit into the locker room at halftime.

The second half was equally thrilling for both teams with a great opening effort by the Rams that was followed by a furious comeback effort by the Broncos. The Rams cut their deficit down to just one point, 40-39 after a dunk from McAllister with 18:02 left to play. From there, the Rams fell behind again, 41-51 before mounting a big comeback once again. The Rams took their first lead of the second half when a Crandell jumper left the Rams on top, 60-59 with 6:39 left to play. The Rams pushed their lead to as many as four points, 65-61 after a pair of free throws from junior guard Derick Brewer, Jr. with 2:46 left and set the stage for a thrilling end to the game. Colon would keep the Rams on top, 69-66 with a lay-up with 1:13 left to play. After a Brewer, Jr. block with 00:59 left, things looked good for the Rams. However, a missed three-pointer and a Bronco jumper left the Rams on top, 69-68 with 00:48 left to play. After a Colon missed three-pointer and a key defensive play by the Rams, the Broncos were left with the ball with 2.8 seconds left to play. From there, the Broncos hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to hand the Rams the 71-69 loss.

The loss leaves the Rams at 4-14 overall and 2-7 in CIAA play. The team falls to 0-3 in CIAA Southern Division play and extends it losing skid to six games. The Rams will return to action, Saturday when the team hosts the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in a 4:00 p.m. game.
