WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-21) took another heartbreaking loss when the team fell, 84-82 against the Livingstone Blue Bears (11-12, 9-7 CIAA). After leading 80-75 with just over three minutes left to play, the Rams fell victim to a 9-2 Livingstone run that gave the Rams the tough Senior Night loss.
The Rams took the loss in spite of a solid overall game. As a team, the Rams shot 43.1% (25-of-58) from the floor in the game. Junior forward William Crandell led the way for the Rams with 25 points and 10 rebounds while fellow junior forward Jamel McAllister returned from injury for a 15-point night.
The game was a thrilling game with a classic first half effort from both teams. In the early going, it was Livingstone taking an early lead. The Rams found themselves trailing 33-23 with 4:24 left in the first half. From there, the Rams staged a tremendous rally, outscoring the Blue Bears 16-6 in the final four minutes of the half. The run included five points from junior guard Derick Brewer, Jr. and it was capped by a pair of free throws from McAllister that tied the game, 39-39 at halftime. He got the free throw line by virtue of a key rebound that that drew a Livingstone foul with 00:00.2 left in the half.
After a thrilling first half of play, the second half did not disappoint with a tremendous effort from both teams. The Rams broke the game open when a lay-up from sophomore guard Julius Barnes left the Rams on top, 64-57 with 9:24 left to play. From there, the Rams kept the Blue Bears at bay. After a Crandell dunk with just over five minutes left to play gave the Rams a 76-70 lead. From there, the Rams continued to push their lead as a Crandell lay-up with 3:14 left gave the Rams an 80-75 lead. From there, the Rams struggled to get their scoring touch as the team managed just two points in the final five minutes of the game. After falling behind, 82-80 with 00:25 left to play, the Rams found themselves tied 82-82 with 00:13 left to play. From there, Livingstone hit a jumper with 00:01 left. A final three-pointer from sophomore guard Robert Colon sailed far right and ended the Rams' night with the loss.
With the loss, the Rams close the regular season with a 5-21 overall record and a 3-13 record in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team will await the announcement for bracket selections for the upcoming 2018 CIAA Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
