    ELIZABETH CITY, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (0-1) started the season with a solid effort, but it was not enough as the team took a 69-63 loss to the Elizabeth City State Vikings (2-1), Wednesday evening. The Rams were solid in almost every facet of the game, but the team came up short in the hard-fought loss.

Under the guidance of a new head coach and an experienced team, there is reason for a lot of optimism about the 2018-19 edition of the Rams.

WSSU Director of Athletics Tonia Walker has notified James Wilhelmi, head coach since June 2014, that the university will not renew his contract, which ends on May 31.

    CHARLOTTE, NC – The road to the 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men’s basketball championship has been laid out as the conference announced the final seedings and the tournament bracket to crown the 2018 CIAA champion. The Rams earned the sixth seed from the CIAA Southern Division and the team will face the Virginia Union Panthers, the #3 seeded team from the CIAA Northern Division in a 12:10 p.m. game, Wednesday afternoon.

    WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (5-21) took another heartbreaking loss when the team fell, 84-82 against the Livingstone Blue Bears (11-12, 9-7 CIAA). After leading 80-75 with just over three minutes left to play, the Rams fell victim to a 9-2 Livingstone run that gave the Rams the tough Senior Night loss.

Smith Golden Bulls (18-8, 11-4 CIAA) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division game, Wednesday evening. The Rams had a strong shooting effort in the game, but the team was no match for a Johnson C. Smith team that shot a scorching hot 53.6% (30-of-56) in the game.

The Rams made several clutch plays to claim their first win of 2018 and their first road win of the season.

The Rams held a late lead over the Bears, but the team fell against a high-pressure defensive effort in the tough loss to the Bears.
  • Rams Fall in Final Seconds of a 63-60 Loss at Saint Augustine's

    RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (4-17, 2-10 CIAA) held a two-point lead in the final seconds, but the team allowed five points in the final 18 seconds of the game to take the heartbreaking loss to the Falcons. The loss was the second time in three seasons that the Falcons have handed the Rams a loss in the final seconds of play. The Rams also took a 58-55 loss to the Falcons in 2016 after a three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Rams kept the game within reach, but the team could not quite get over the hump in the hard-fought loss to the Blue Bears.

Smith Golden Bulls (12-7, 5-2 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams controlled much of the game and took a lead into the final seconds, but the team fell just shy late to take their second straight home loss by a combined three points and added more heartbreak to the team’s current struggles.

The Rams held a 69-68 lead with just under two seconds left, but an FSU three-pointer at the buzzer sent the Rams home with the loss, Wednesday evening.

The Rams trailed for much of the second half, but tied the game in the final minutes of play, but the team could not get the win as the Trojans hit some key shots and free throws to hand the Rams the loss.

After falling behind by as many as 18 points in the second half, the Rams staged a furious comeback, highlighted by a pair of free throws, a key block, and a game-winning drawn charge by junior forward Jamel McAllister to claim the win for the Rams.

The Rams turned to their defense to get the win as they held the Lions to just 56 points and shooting just 34.4% (21-of-61) from the floor.

After trailing early, the Rams had a big second half, but fell just short in a hard-fought loss to the Panthers.
