Personal...Philip Stitt, has just finished his fifth season as the Head Coach of the Winston-Salem State University Rams men's basketball team. He led the Rams to a 19-10 record this past season as the Rams fell in the second round of the CIAA men's basketball tournament to the Bulldogs of Bowie State in WSSU's final season at the NCAA Division II level. In 2004-05, Stitt led the Rams to a 22-8 record, a CIAA Western Division regular-season title, a CIAA Tournament semi-finals appearance, and an NCAA Division II Championship Tournament berth, en route to earning CIAA Coach of the Year honors. Stitt has never had a losing season at the head of the Rams' program as he led WSSU to a 16-12 mark during the 2003-04 season and was named CIAA Coach of the Week four times. He guided the Rams to a 15-14 record in 2002-03 and a 22-7 record in 2001-2002. During the 2001-02 season the Rams lost in the CIAA semi-finals, coming up just short versus Shaw, losing by a point. However, Stitt led the Rams to their fourth straight NCAA Tournament Appearance, the first under Stitt, and advanced two rounds, ultimately losing to Shaw at the buzzer. In 2002-03 he led the Rams to a CIAA Tournament semi-finals appearance as he has done three times in his five seasons. This season, he looks to a very young team to continue the WSSU winning tradition. The Rams lose two starters and return three as youth will once again prevail in Winston-Salem. The 2005-2006 Rams were one of the youngest teams in the CIAA, and the 2006-07 edition of the Rams will be no exception as WSSU, despite returning seven players from last season, will be even younger. A member of the Ram coaching staff since 1998, Stitt has been a part of five 20-win seasons, two CIAA Championships, five NCAA Tournament berths and two NCAA Division II Sweet 16 appearances. During this period the Rams have posted an astounding 165-67 (.711) record. This season will be another test for Stitt as he will once again have to teach young players a complicated, up-tempo WSSU offensive and defensive system. The Rams will be facing an unprecedented challenge in 2006-07 as they leave the Division II ranks and head to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and NCAA Division I play. Stitt will be the first coach to head the WSSU program at the Division I level as he looks to earn six more victories in order to eclipse the century mark for wins at WSSU. Coach Stitt's collegiate coaching career began in 1991 as assistant at Florida Community College at Jacksonville. After spending three seasons with the Stars, he moved on to Division I Jacksonville University where he assisted with practice and game coaching, recruiting, and the organization of basketball camps. In 1997 Stitt joined the coaching staff at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In his only season at Fayetteville State University, the Broncos finished 17-10, tied for second place in the CIAA Western Division. A Jacksonville, Florida native, Coach Stitt earned his B.A. in health, physical education and recreation in 1991 from Brewton-Parker College where he earned multiple playing awards during the 1998 and 1999 seasons. Stitt resides in Winston-Salem.
