#1 Virginia Union Hammers WSSU Rams 59-42 On The Road

Final Stats

RICHMOND, VA - The Rams of Winston-Salem State University had a rough outing on Thursday evening as almost nothing went right for them in Richmond, VA as they fell in defeat 59-42 to the top-ranked Panthers of Virginia Union in a CIAA inter-divisional men's basketball contest.

The Rams shot only 16.7% during the contest's first 20 minutes of play as they watched their opponent shoot a blistering 57% in the half en route to a double-digit halftime deficit.

The second half would see the shooting improve for the visiting Rams as they improved their shooting to 42.3% for the game's second stanza, however WSSU hit only 30% of their field goal attempts for the game en route to the loss.

Uncharacteristically for the Rams, they would go nearly 30 minutes of play in the contest without hitting a three-point field goal as WSSU missed its first 14 shots from long range before an Alleggrie Guinn three broke the ice midway through the second half.  WSSU turned in an 0-for-9 performance from long range in the first half and hit only three of ten in the second twenty minutes.

Leading the way for the Rams was Jamal Durham who recorded a team-high 13 points.  He was the only Ram player in double figures as Guinn chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.

The Rams fall to 6-5 overall with the loss and fall to 1-2 in the CIAA.  Virginia Union improves to 8-1 overall and moves to 1-0 in the CIAA.  The Panthers, the nation's top-ranked team looked every bit as good as their national-billing would suggest as they led the contest from start to finish.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 as they play host to the Falcons of Saint Augustine's College.  Game time is slated for 7:30 pm in the LJVM Coliseum Annex.
