WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University mens basketball team's 15-game losing streak ended on Sunday evening as they defeated the Ferrum College Panthers by the score of 77-56 at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, NC.

 

The Rams would never trail in the contest as WSSU jumped out to a 19-5 lead only three minutes into the contest as the game's outcome was never in doubt as WSSU earned their second win of the 2006-07 season.

 

Nine WSSU players recorded points during the first half of play as starter Darius Floyd (Gatsonia, NC) and reserve Curtis Hines (Charlotte, NC) scored 10 points each in the game's first 20 minutes as the Rams raced towards a 13-point lead at 47-34 headed into the halftime intermission.


 

 

 

To the Panthers' credit, Division III Ferrum College refused to go away without a fight as they cut the WSSU lead to as little as eight points at 50-42 with 14:27 remaining in the contest.

 

However, the Rams would not be denied as they mounted an 11-1 run over the next two minutes and 36 seconds to put the game away and earn a 77-56 victory.

 

Leading the way for the Rams were both Darius Floyd and Curtis Hines as both players tallied a dozen points in the win.  Floyd and Hines were joined in double figures by Brian Fisher (Marietta, GA) who chipped in with 11 points in the win. 

 

Ferrum's Keith Harris led all scorers with 15 points in the loss.  Cedric Jones and Justin Henderson turned in double-digit scoring performances to join Harris in double-figures as they scored 12 and 10 points respectively.

 

The win improves WSSU to 2-18 overall with the win while Ferrum College falls to 6-7 on the season.

 

WSSU will have 11 days off before returning to action on Thursday, January 18, 2007 at 7:30 pm as they travel to Norfolk, Virginia to face the Spartans of Norfolk State University.
