Rams Win Fifth Straight Game; Defeat Virginia State 79-70

Jan. 24, 2006

Final Stats

PETERSBURG, VA - Alleggrie Guinn's 26 points and eight rebounds led the Winston-Salem State University Rams past the Trojans of Virginia State University at Daniels Gymnasium in Petersburg, VA on Tuesday evening by the score of 79-70 as the Rams earned their fifth consecutive victory.

Guinn was not the only Ram in double figures as All-CIAA forward Audly Wehner tallied 18 points and eight rebounds as he turned in a seven-of-11 shooting performance from the field.

The Rams, winners of five straight games shot above 50% from the field for the fifth time in the last five games as they connected on 61.7% of their field goal attempts.

WSSU led by only three points at the halftime intermission as they led the Trojans 37-34 following a half in which they converted on 15 of 23 field goal attempts.

The second half would see the Rams trail by one point on a pair of Trojan free throws with just over six minutes to play.

However, staunch WSSU defense would again pave the way for the WSSU victory as WSSU forced 12 Virginia State turnovers, eight of which came in the game's final 20 minutes of play.

Leading the way for the Trojans was Rodney Henry who recorded 17 points in the losing effort.

With the win, the Rams improve to 11-5 overall and move to 6-2 in the CIAA (2-0 CIAA West).  The Trojans fall to 6-8 overall and drop to 0-5 in the CIAA with the loss.

WSSU will return to action on Saturday, January 28, 2006 at 8:00 pm as they play host to the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University at the Joel Coliseum Annex as the Rams resume CIAA Western Division play.
