Winston-Salem, NC - Adversity eventually affects all college basketball teams, and often times the measure of how good those teams really are is evidenced by how they respond to that adversity. This may be a thought on the minds of the Winston-Salem State University Rams after they dropped their third straight game on Wednesday evening by the score of 77-65 to the visiting Broncos of Fayetteville State University at the CE Gaines Center.
Despite receiving a career-high 23 points from guard Rashad McGee (Jr./G/5'10"/Waxhaw, NC) the Rams still fell in defeat as the Broncos stole a victory on the road in Winston-Salem, NC.
A packed gymnasium watched the Rams shoot an ice-cold 33.8% from the floor in the game, connecting on only 22 of their 65 shots from the floor. The Rams got virtually no offensive production from the perimeter in the contest except for the 23 points from McGee as the remainder of the WSSU guards would go a combined 4 for 37 (10.8%) from the field in the contest.
Fayetteville State was led by Donell Williams (Jr./G/6'3"/LosAngeles, CA) who tallied 21 points and 10 rebounds in what may prove to be a pivotal CIAA Western Division victory.
With the win the Broncos improve to 11-8 overall (5-5 CIAA, 3-2 Western Division) while the Rams, who have lost their last three games, fall to 13-7 overall (4-6 CIAA, 1-3 Western Division) and are slowly watching the possibility of earning a first round CIAA tournament bye slip away.
WSSU returns to action on Saturday, January 28th, 2004 at the LJVM Coliseum at 8:00 pm as they will play host to the Eagles of North Carolina Central University. The contest, sure to be a hotly contested affair, will be broadcast live on television on MBC Network.
