Final Stats

Fayetteville, NC - The Rams basketball team was on a tear headed to Fayetteville, NC to face off against the Broncos of Fayetteville State University on Tuesday evening as WSSU took its 13-5 overall record into the heart of the CIAA's Western Division league schedule looking to add yet another check in the win column. The Rams put their four-game win streak on the line in an attempt to win a fifth straight game for the second time during 2004-05, as they did just that, improving to 14-5 overall in the process with a 74-64 win over Fayetteville State.

The first half of play was just as the Rams and their fans could have hoped for as WSSU used excellent offensive execution and shot selection to jump out to a slim early lead, one that they would hold for the game's entire first half of play.

WSSU connected on 14 of their 29 field goal attempts during the game's first 20 minutes, en route to heating up Capel Arena with a shooting percentage of 48.3%. Conversely, they held the host-team Broncos to a 36.7% shooting performance as tight defense led to very few second-chance points for Fayetteville State as the Rams limited the Broncos to successful conversion on only 11 of their 30 attempts from the floor.

The Rams once again got a spectacular performance from All-CIAA First-Team candidate Alleggrie Guinn (Charlotte, NC) as he recorded 11 points on five-of-ten shooting from the floor. WSSU was also the beneficiary of a pair of players that were returning to their hometown of Fayetteville, NC for a homecoming of sorts as Audly Wehner and Darnell Gregory each chipped in with four rebounds, with Wehner tallying four points as well during the first half.

The second half of play was witness to less than stellar basketball for the first five minutes of play as the two teams continued to look as though they were feeling each other out, trading blows along the way.

However, it would be the Rams who would regroup first as WSSU used transition-game offense, and an inside-out scheme that would see the visitors jump out to their first double-digit lead on a Curtis Hines (Charlotte, NC) three-pointer with 11:41 left in the contest, leading 51-41.

The Rams would continue to add to the lead as Fayetteville native Audly Wehner would give the Rams a 13-point cushion with an inside power move with only 5:17 to play in the contest as WSSU led the Broncos 61-48.

Leading the way for WSSU was Alleggrie Guinn with 21 points as he was joined in double figures by Rashad McGee with 12 points and Terris Sifford with 11 points.

With the win, the Rams improve to 14-5 overall and 7-1 in the CIAA. The win also propels WSSU to 2-1 in the CIAA's Western Division. The loss drops Fayetteville State to 7-13 overall and 4-6 in the CIAA en route to dropping the Broncos to 2-3 in the CIAA's Western Division.

WSSU will return to action on Thursday, February 3rd, 2005 as they travel to Lawrenceville, VA to face off against the Tigers of Saint Paul's College in a CIAA intra-division basketball contest that was originally postponed from January 27th, 2005 due to inclement weather. In an unusual change of events, the Rams will take to the court for the early game, with tip-off slated for 5:30 pm, with the Lady Rams taking to the court at 7:30 pm.
