WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The capacity crowd at the C.E. Gaines Center was treated to a Rams’ victory on Saturday afternoon as Winston-Salem State earned their ninth victory of the year, surpassing last season’s win total, as they downed the Bison of Howard 62-58 in front of over 3,000 spectators.

Howard would lead for only 12 seconds in the contest as the Rams opened the contest with a 10-6 run over the first four minutes of play en route to the victory.

The dynamic duo of Shelton Carter and Paul Davis combined to score 13 points during the first 20 minutes of play as Winston-Salem State never relinquished their lead as the Rams held the scoring advantage for nearly the entire contest.

Davis and Carter would spark the Rams to a 52 percent shooting display in the first half as WSSU led 30-24 at the halftime intermission.

Building on the momentum provided by the capacity crowd the Rams would push their lead to as many as 12 points in the second half as they pulled away from the Bison.

The Rams would allow Howard to get no closer than five points until the final minute of the contest when Curtis White scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the final 1:06 as he hit back-to-back three pointers and tallied a trio of free throws.

Despite the late-game offensive outburst from White, the Bison would not be able to overcome a staunch WSSU defensive effort that held the visitors to only 33.8 percent shooting in the game.

Offensively the Rams used a deliberate half-court effort as WSSU used an inside-out game plan that resulted in 34 points in the paint as Paul Davis recorded 14 points, MacIntoche Alcius added nine points and Corey Morris chipped in with six points in the victory.

WSSU’s guards were led by Brian Fisher who scored 10 points and Marcus Wells who added four points.

The victory improves WSSU to 9-12 on the season and moves the Rams within one win of their first double-digit win total since 2007-08.

The Rams return to action on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. as they play host to the Pirates of Hampton University at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
