CHARLOTTE, NC - The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team broke their two-game losing streak on Saturday evening as they defeated the 23rd-ranked Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University at Brayboy Gymnasium in Charlotte, NC by the score of 81-57 to pull to 7-6 in the CIAA and 3-4 in the CIAA Western Division.

 

The Rams jumped out ahead of the Golden Bulls early as WSSU raced out to a first-half lead that grew to as many as 22 points during a half in which the Rams shot a blistering 65% (17 of 26) from the field en route to a commanding 49-25 lead headed into the locker room for the intermission.

 

The second half of play saw the Rams shoot a considerably cooler 45.8% from the field as JCSU mounted a small comeback attempt that fell short in a half in which WSSU converted 11 of 24 shots from the field.


 

 

 

The Golden Bulls, the nation's 23rd-ranked team would get no closer than 20 points the rest of the way as the Rams pushed their lead to as many as 29 points at 79-50 with only 2:43 to play in the contest.

 

WSSU was led by All-CIAA forward Audly Wehner who tallied 25 point and seven rebounds in the win.  All-CIAA guard Alleggrie Guinn tallied 15 points and three rebounds as he joined Wehner in double-figures.

 

JCSU was led by David Sanders who recorded 13 points and four rebounds in the losing effort.

 

With the win, the Rams move to 14-9 overall and improve to 7-6 in the CIAA (3-4 CIAA West).  

 

WSSU returns to action on Tuesday, February 14, 2006 at 7:30 pm in a Valentine's Day contest versus the Blue Bears of Livingstone College at the LJVM Coliseum Annex.
