Fayetteville, NC - The outcome of the game was in doubt until very late in the second half of play, but the Rams of Winston-Salem State University came up just short on Saturday evening at Capel Arena as they were handed a 76-70 defeat by the Broncos of Fayetteville State University to drop to 15-10 overall and 6-9 in the CIAA.

The first half of play was streaky as each team tallied multiple runs, and neither squad was able to open up an advantage of more than nine points at any time during the first 20 minutes of play.

The Rams, trailing by nine with 2:06 to play in the first half, closed out the first period of play on an 8-0 run and would ultimately trail the Broncos by one, at 36-35 heading into the locker room for the halftime intermission.

The second half of play would prove to be even more of a see-saw affair as the two teams traded field goals and free throws with neither team being able to establish offensive dominance over their opponent.

The Rams opened up a four-point lead with 6:37 remaining in the contest as they capped a 6-0 run with back to back three-point field goals by Jay Maynard (Sr./G/6'3"/Jacksonville, NC) and Rashad McGee (Jr./G/5'10"/Waxhaw, NC) to lead 63-59.

The lead was short lived however, as the Broncos would tally a run of their own, reeling off nine straight points to regain the lead at 71-65 with just over a minute remaining in the game.

The Broncos hit four straight free throws to seal the victory, and handed the Rams the CIAA Western Division loss.

Despite having four of five starters in double figures, the Rams fall to 15-10 overall (6-9 CIAA) and 3-6 in the Western Division. With the victory, the Broncos improve to 15-9 overall (8-5 CIAA) and remain atop the Western Division at 6-2.

The Rams return to action on Tuesday, February 14th, 2004 at 7:30 pm when they travel to Durham, NC to take on the Eagles of North Carolina Central University.
