Rams Avenge Early Season Loss; Defeat Longwood In OT, 83-77

Feb. 19, 2004

Box Score |  Notes

Farmville, VA - It was almost déjà vu all over again as time wound down in the men's basketball game between the Winston-Salem State University Rams and the Lancers of Longwood as WSSU once again saw the Lancers hit a big three-point field goal in the games final moments.

Unlike the first meeting between the two teams, which was the Rams' first contest of the year, on November 15th, 2003, the Lancers' three did not propel them to victory. Instead, the three pointer forced an overtime session between the two teams, one that WSSU emerged from with a 83-77 road-game victory to close out the 2003-04 regular season.

The previous meeting between the two teams saw Longwood hit a buzzer-beater with just under a second on the clock to earn a 71-70 victory. When fans heard that the Rams would not only start their season, but finish their season, with Longwood, visions of that incident in November played over again in their minds.

It was not to be this time as the Rams had six players in double figures in scoring as point-guard Rashad-McGee (Jr./5'10"/G/Waxhaw, NC) led WSSU with 17 points. He was joined in double figures by Vince Sessoms (Sr./F/Kinston, NC) who tallied 17 points, Terris Sifford (Jr./F/Cleveland, NC) with 14, John Adams (Sr./F/Charlotte, NC) with 11 and Jay Maynard (Sr./G/Jacksonville, NC) and Alleggrie Guinn (So./G/Charlotte, NC) who chipped in 10 points each.

Longwood was led by freshman Michael Jefferson who tallied 26 points in the loss.

The Lancers, trailing by three points with under a minute to play in the contest, hit a three as the shot clock wound down to tie the game with 31 seconds remaining.

The Rams held the ball for the final shot only to see Darnell Gregory's (So./F/Fayetteville, NC) jumper roll out of the cylinder to send the game to overtime.

The Rams doubled up the Lancers, 12-6 in the overtime session and improved to 16-11 overall (6-10 CIAA, 3-7 Western Division) while the Lancers fall to 4-20. WSSU will return to action on Wednesday, February 23rd at the 2004 CIAA Tournament against an as-yet to be determined first round opponent.
