Rams Win Streak Is Over; Fall To Fayetteville State University 67-57

Feb. 20, 2005

Final Stats

Winston-Salem, NC - Even good teams lose a game once in awhile. That is exactly what happened to the Rams of Winston-Salem State University on Sunday afternoon as their 20th win of the season proved to be an elusive one as WSSU fell in defeat to the visiting Broncos of Fayetteville State University by the score of 67-57 at the LJVM Coliseum Annex in a CIAA Western Division basketball contest.

The Rams, who fall to 19-6 overall and 12-2 in the CIAA (7-2 CIAA West) with the loss, did not have a good second half of play on Sunday afternoon as the hungrier Broncos were able to overcome a six-point halftime deficit and outscore the Rams 44-28 in the game's final 20 minutes of play.

The game's end result would be a far cry from how the contest started as it took WSSU only 3:30 to earn their first 10-point lead of the day as they led the Broncos 14-4 with 16:30 remaining in the first half.

However, the Broncos were patient in their offensive system and eventually were able to trim the WSSU lead to a more manageable six-points, which would prove to be the same six-point margin that the Rams would take to the locker room at halftime as they led by the score of 29-23.

The second half of play would be the antithesis of the game's first 20 minutes as the Broncos came out of the locker room with a renewed sense of purpose, promptly going on a 12-3 run that turned a four-point deficit into a five-point advantage, leading 35-32 only three minutes into the half.

The Broncos would never trail in the contest again after pulling ahead by five points. They would continue to build upon their lead, eventually leading by as many as 12 points, at 56-44 with 4:39 to play in the contest.

WSSU would get no closer than seven points back for the remainder of the game, eventually dropping the 67-57 decision that snapped a WSSU 10-game win streak.

Leading the way for the Rams was Alleggrie Guinn who tallied 17 points in the game, bringing his career total to 1,032 points in 82 games. He was joined in double figures by Rashad McGee who tallied 11 points, and Terris Sifford who recorded 10 points.

The Broncos were led by Donnell Williams who recorded 19 points and six rebounds. He led all scorers in the contest, and was joined by Brad Deshazor in double figures as he tallied 11 points.

The lone bright spot on the afternoon was that Ram forward Audly Wehner returned to the Ram bench after missing the last four games with an ankle sprain. He played 11 minutes in the contest and scored five points.

WSSU falls to 19-6 overall with the loss (12-2 CIAA, 7-2 CIAA West) while the Broncos improve to 9-16 overall with the win (5-9 CIAA, 3-4 CIAA West).

The Rams will return to action on Tuesday, February 22nd, 2004 at 7:30 pm as they play host to the Eagles of North Carolina Central University at the LJVM Coliseum in WSSU's final home game of the 2004-05 season.
