Hickory, NC - The Winston-Salem State University Rams basketball team avenged their opening-day loss to the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College on Tuesday evening as they defeated LRC 51-50 in front of approximately 500 people at Shuford Gymnasium in Hickory, NC.
WSSU's Audly Wehner led the Rams with a team-high 14 points on four of 10 shooting from the field. Wehner also pulled down four rebounds and was a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line.
The game was a see-saw affair that saw neither team establish a commanding lead, as both the host team and the Rams traded baskets and shot poorly from the field.
The contest would see WSSU trail the Bears by three points at the halftime intermission, but saw the Rams benefit from their stingy defense that generated 16 steals en route to the come-from-behind victory.
The game would come down to its final possession as the Rams clung to the slimmest of leads, by one point, at 51-50 with just over nine seconds remaining. With senior guard, and 86% career free throw shooter Rashad McGee staring at the front end of a one-and-one situation.
McGee would uncharacteristically miss the first free throw and Lenoir-Rhyne would get a good look at the game winning shot as the Bear's David Lawson saw his 15-footer rim out and preserve WSSU's 51-50 win.
Joining Wehner in double-figures was McGee who, despite missing the late-game free throw, scored 10 points on four-of-seven shooting from the field and two-of-three shooting from the free throw line.
The Bear's All-American Roman Davis led all scorers with 16 points, going six-of-nine from the field in a losing effort.
With the win, the Rams improve to 3-1 overall (0-0 CIAA) while LRC falls to 2-2 overall (0-0 SAC).
