Georgia Southern Hands WSSU Ten-Point Defeat At Home, 59-49

Dec. 2, 2006

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Missed opportunities were the downfall of the Rams on Saturday evening at the C.E. Gaines Center as they fell in defeat to the Eagles of Georgia Southern University by the score of 59-49 in front of over 3,200 fans in men's college basketball action.

Winston-Salem State University, under the guidance of head coach Bobby Collins, played well in the contest, but the Rams had trouble converting in transition and missed several easy opportunities as the Eagles snuck out of Winston-Salem with their second win over WSSU this season.

"They did a good job of putting the nail in the coffin up at their place, and we were very much aware of what they were going to do to us.  They ran their stuff well.  We had ample opportunities to get easy baskets and we didn't finish tonight.  We missed about five point blank lay-ups.  We had our chances and we just couldn't finish in the game" WSSU head coach Bobby Collins said in post-game interviews.

First half action saw the Rams hit only 30.4% of their field goal attempts as WSSU found the back of the net on only seven of their 23 shot attempts during the first 20 minutes of play.

Georgia Southern jumped out to an early eight-point lead a little over seven minutes into the contest, eventually holding a margin that they would never relinquish.

Second half action would again see the Eagles use their interior size advantage and solid guard play to continue to keep the hard-charging Rams at bay.

The combination of All-Conference guard Donte Gennie's 15 points, coupled with Louis Graham's 14 points and eight rebounds helped to propel the Eagles to the victory, their fourth of the season and second over WSSU during the 2006-07 season.

Leading the way for the Rams were Brian Fisher and Jamal Durham who each tallied 12 points in the losing effort.

"Their one through five guys are solid and they are a very good team and when you don't take advantage of the opportunities that you get you don't win, and that is what happened tonight." WSSU head coach Bobby Collins commented.

The loss drops the Rams to 1-10 on the season while the Eagles improve to 4-2 with the victory.

WSSU returns to action on December 7, 2006 as they welcome BIG EAST Conference member the University of South Florida to the C.E. Gaines Center at 7:00 pm.
