Durham And Stitt Receive Weekly CIAA Basketball Honors

Jan. 17, 2006

Hampton, VA - Winston-Salem State University head men's basketball coach Philip Stitt and freshman forward Jamal Durham were named the CIAA's coach and rookie of the week for the week ending January 14, 2006 as announced by the CIAA's Office of Media Relations on Monday afternoon.

Stitt, the Ram's fifth-year head coach, led the Rams to a pair of wins this past week as WSSU posted a flawless mark following wins over Saint Augustine's College (98-90) on Tuesday and a 22-point victory (69-47) over Livingstone College on Saturday evening.  The pair of wins over two CIAA Western Division foes moves WSSU into a tie for first place in the CIAA West heading into this week's action.  With the wins, Stitt moves his overall record at WSSU to an impressive 83-46 (.643).  For his efforts this past week, Stitt has been named the CIAA Coach of the Week.

Durham, a true-freshman forward from Winston-Salem, NC continues to impress coaches, players and fans from around the CIAA as he helped to lead the Rams to a 2-0 record this past week and a first-place ranking in the CIAA Western Division.

Despite being a true freshman, Durham is currently the Rams' third leading scorer averaging 11.5 points per contest.  In wins over Saint Augustine's and Livingstone this week, Durham averaged 16 points, three rebounds and one blocked shot for the Rams. In WSSU's 98-90 win over Western Division foe Saint Augustine's, Durham contributed 18 points, two rebounds and one assist to lead the Rams in scoring.  For his efforts, he has been named the CIAA Rookie of the Week.

The Rams return to action on Thursday, January 18, 2006 as they travel to Raleigh, NC to face the Shaw University Bears in an inter-division CIAA contest.  WSSU defeated the Bears 71-63 on December 14, 2005 in a designated non-conference matchup.
