Jan. 25, 2004
Winston-Salem, NC - A pair of WSSU basketball players have been named the recipients of the Crown Trophy-WSSU Student Athlete of the Week awards for the week ending January 25th, 2004 as Ram forward Audly Wehner (Fr./F/6'5"/Fayetteville, NC) and Lady Ram Tiffany Tonkins (So./F/6'2"/Greensboro, NC) have garnered the honor.
Tonkins helped to lead the Lady Rams to a pair CIAA victories this week, one of them coming versus Western Division rival Johnson C. Smith that helped to keep WSSU sitting atop of the Western Division, undefeated in divisional play (3-0). Tonkins recorded a career-game versus the Lady Golden Bulls as she scored eight points, pulled down 11 rebounds, dished out two assists and blocked six shots in the victory.
Wehner led WSSU, despite the Rams 0-2 record on the week (losing to JCSU by one point, and to VSU in overtime), he was once again chosen for CIAA Rookie of the Week honors. This marks the fifth time that Wehner has been chosen as the CIAA's Rookie of the Week, and the first time that he has received the honor for three consecutive weeks. In two games this week he averaged 23.5 points, going an efficient 18 of 21 shooting from the field. Against Johnson C. Smith he was a perfect 10/10 from field and 6/10 from the charity stripe for 26 points.
For their efforts this past week, both Wehner and Tonkins have been chosen as the Crown Trophy Athletes of the Week.
