Hampton, VA - Winston-Salem State University basketball player Audly Wehner and head men's basketball coach Philip Stitt have been awarded CIAA weekly basketball honors for the week ending January 30th, 2005 for their efforts in leading the Rams to a pair of wins last week over Virginia State and #13 Bowie State University to improve to 13-5 overall.
Wehner, a sophomore forward from Fayetteville, NC was instrumental in leading the Rams to two wins last week. Wehner shot 67 percent from the field, scored 19 points and added nine rebounds and four steals in the Rams' 67-62 upset of 13th ranked Bowie State. Wehner also had 12 points and seven rebounds in the Rams' 66-52 win over Virginia State. For his efforts, he has been named the CIAA Player of the Week.
It was not only Wehner who helped to guide the Rams to a 2-0 record on the week as WSSU head coach Philip Stitt used stellar defense and timely game management to help WSSU earn a pair of wins. Coach Stitt picked up his second win over a Top 15 opponent this season when his Rams knocked off 13th ranked Bowie State 67-62 on Saturday. With the win the Rams, who also beat previously #1 ranked Virginia Union on January 4th, improve to 13-5 and are on a four-game winning streak.
