WSSU's Jamal Durham Named To CIAA All-Rookie Men's Basketball Team

HAMPTON, VA - The 2006 CIAA Basketball All-Rookie teams have been announced as voted on by the CIAA-Sports Information Directors' Association, and WSSU's Jamal Durham has been named as one of the five members of the 2006 team, continuing a tradition of excellent newcomers to play at Winston-Salem State University.

 

Durham, a true freshman forward from Winston-Salem, NC is second in the CIAA in rookie scoring with 10.3 points per game and ranks second in the CIAA in rookie rebounding with 4.2 boards per contest.  He has started every game for the Rams in 2005-06 and has led WSSU in scoring five times.  A forward who is converting on nearly 46% of his field goal attempts, he was named the CIAA Rookie of the Week on January 17, 2006.  For his accomplishments, he has been named to the CIAA All-Rookie team.

 

The CIAA announced that Katania Walker of Virginia State University has been selected as the 2006 CIAA Women's Rookie of the Year. A Sports Management major who hails from Virginia Beach, VA, Walker is the Lady Trojans' second leading scorer at 12.3 points per game. In the CIAA she tops all rookie women ranking 17th in scoring, is 7th in both three-point field goal percentage and three-point field goals made, is 4th in free throw percentage and 15th in steals.

 

As well, for the men, Bruce Royal of Saint Paul's College has been named 2006 CIAA Rookie of the Year. Royal, who has started every game this season for the Tigers, is averaging a conference best 6.39 assists per game. He also ranks 4th in minutes played, 18th in scoring (13.0 ppg), and 10th in both steals and assist/turnover ratio. A native of Newport News, VA, he is majoring in Business Administration.

 

The Men's and Women's All-Rookie Basketball teams will be honored at their respective tip off banquets in Charlotte, NC the week of the 2006 CIAA Basketball Tournament.
