WSSU Head Mens Basketball Coach Philip Stitt Announced The Signing Of Four Student-Athletes To National Letters Of Intent On Thursday

June 1, 2006

WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Winston-Salem State University head men's basketball coach Philip Stitt announced on Thursday morning that the Rams have signed four student-athletes to National Letters of Intent to attend Winston-Salem State University and become members of the Rams' men's basketball program.  Three of the student-athletes will be true freshman with the fourth coming to WSSU by way of Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC.

The lone transfer is David Moore, a 6'5" forward from Durham, NC who comes to WSSU from Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, NC where he is the all-time scoring and rebounding leader at CFCC.  Moore turned in back-to-back Second-Team All-Region X seasons as he was honored in both 2004-05 and 2005-06.  Playing under head coach Jamie Stowe, Moore turned in career averages of 12.0 points and 6.14 rebounds per game while at CFCC.

Darius Floyd is the first of three true freshmen that will join the Rams in 2006-07.  A 6'1" guard from Ashbrook High School in Gastonia, NC he finished his scholastic basketball career with 1,352 points, third all-time at Ashbrook H.S. behind NBA hall-of-famer James Worthy.  A second-team All State (Class 4A) selection in 2005-06, Floyd was named the Big South Conference 3A/4A Player of the Year as he led his team to a 25-3 record and a West Region Semifinals berth.  An all-conference player for three consecutive years, Floyd participated in the Charlotte Pro-Am All-Star game as well as being chosen to participate in the NCHSAA East/West All-Star Game that will be played in July of 2006.  Under head coach Marty Hatchell, Floyd averaged 20.9 points per game during his junior year and 16.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.72 assists and shot 47.9% from the field during his senior season.

Joining Floyd and Moore will be Brian Fisher, a 6'1" guard from Kennessaw Mountain High School in Kennesaw, GA.  A native of Marietta, GA, Fisher was an Honorable Mention All-State (Class 5A) selection in 2005-06. A second-team All-Cobb County selection in both his junior and senior season, he was a participant in the Georgia North/South All-Star Game that took place this past March.  Under head coach Jesse Bonner, Fisher turned in averages of 23.0 points, 4.0 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 steals per game during the 2005-06 season.

Rounding out the four signees is Jason Smith, a 6'2" guard from East Mecklenburg High School in Charlotte, NC who signed with the Rams in the fall of 2005.  Smith, a 6'2", 180-pound point guard will immediately add size to the Rams' point guard spot, and bring with him talent that helped to lead East Mecklenburg to a 20-8 record and a Southwest Conference Championship in 2004-05.

The Honorable Mention All-Southwest Conference selection (as a junior) averaged 10.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 6.0 steals last season as he started all 28 games for the Eagles.

"One of things we loved about him was his ability to see the floor," Stitt said. "He just loves to distribute the ball and sees where his teammates are at all times.  He is a quality young man who does very well in the classroom, and has a GPA above a 3.0.  He was being recruited by several Division I schools and he becomes the first men's basketball player at WSSU who will play all four years at the Division I level for us."

WSSU head coach Philip Stitt expressed his pleasure with the four student-athletes who have signed letters of intent to attend WSSU and play basketball.  The Rams' 2006-07 roster will again be young with the departure of three-time All-CIAA guard Alleggrie Guinn, who finishes his career sitting seventh on WSSU's all-time scoring list.

Joining the list of departures is also senior-to-be All-CIAA forward Audly Wehner.  Wehner will not return to Winston-Salem State University as he has decided to pursue an academic curriculum not offered at WSSU.

Stitt said that the Rams' 2006-07 basketball schedule is currently in its final stages and will hopefully be released in several weeks.
