WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Anthony Carruthers passed for 156 yards and two scores and rushed 14 times for 35 yards as the White Team defeated the Red Team 19-17 to win the Annual WSSU Football Red and White Spring Game.
The White Team was coached by Head Coach Connell Maynor; defensive coordinator and linebacker coach, Kienus Bouleware; offensive line coach, John Eder; and tight ends coach, Jason Mai. The Red Team was coached by wide receivers coach, Duane Taylor; cornerback coach, Richard Hayes; safety coach, Daren Hart; and defensive line coach, Artis Smith. The two teams were chosen in a mock draft earlier in the week.
For the White Team, Carrothers led the way rushing with 35 yards, while Maurice Lewis added 24 yards on nine carries. Everette Proctor paced the white team with four catches for 81 yards, while Jameze Massey added four catches for 41 yards and a score.
Defensively for the White Team, Carrson Oxendine finished with six tackles, while Carlos Field finished with five tackles and one interception returned for 40 yards. Jerry Chandler also finished with five tackles and one sack. Barry Tripp and Mareece Harris combined on a sack that forced a safety and score for the White squad.
For the Red Team, Dequann Leak rushed for 26 yards in seven carries, while quarterback DeShean Townsend added 17 yards on 13 carries. Townsend finished going 14 of 33 with one interception and one touchdown pass for 180 yards. Jamal Williams caught six passes for 95 yards and Jahuann Butler also had six catches for 78 yards and one touchdown.
Defensively, Justin Wilkerson had an interception for a touchdown while Jerrell Jackson and Daniel Mungin had sacks for Red Team. Efferlan Williams led the way with six tackles, while Jermaine Kesler and James Hickman had five tackles each.
After a scoreless first quarter, the White Team put the first points on the board with a 21 yard field goal by Alejandro Suarez with 10:57 in the second quarter. They would find the endzone for the touchdown of the day when Anthony Carrothers found Jameze Massey behind the secondary for a 28 yard score to push their lead to 10-0 heading into the half.
The Red Team would regroup after the halftime and get right back into the game with a solid defensive effort to begint he third quarter. With 10:05 on the clock, the White Team's Anthony Carrothers dropped back to pass but tried to force a throw as he was being hounded by pressure, and the pass was picked off and returned 15 yards for a touchdown by Justin Wilkerson to put the Red Team on the board and cut the White Team's lead to three at 10-7.
The Red Team would even up the score with 1:25 left in the period, when Landon Thayer connected on a 35 yard field to bring the score to 10-10 heading into the fourth quarter.
But the White Team would make adjustments and would come up with one of the biggest plays of the day when Barry Tripp and Mareece Harris would sack DeShean Townsend in the endzone for a safety pushing the White Team back out in front 12-10 with 11:54 to play.
Six minutes later, the White Team would strike again, this time a Anthony Carrothers pass to Ricky Rozier from 15 yards out to push their lead to 19-10, and seeming put the game away.
But once again the Red Team would find life, and would march down the field. With 2:12 left in the game, DeShean Townsend would find Jahuann Butler behind the White defensive secondary to pull within two at 19-17.
The game would end with the Red Team running out of time, giving Coach Maynor's White Team the winner.
