Futility Continues For Bulls Versus Rams; WSSU Defeats JCSU 38-0

Nov. 1, 2004

Winston-Salem, NC - The Rams of Winston-Salem State University have the number of the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls, and that number is zero. Zero is the exact number of points the Golden Bulls have put on the board versus the Rams since the year 200o, a span of three games that WSSU has held JCSU scoreless. The three-game streak of holding an opponent scoreless is the longest such streak for the Rams since holding the Tigers of St. Paul's College scoreless in four straight meetings in the early 1960's.

Ram fans, in town for the Homecoming Weekend would see the Rams hold the hapless Golden Bulls to only 130 yards of total offense, all coming through the air, as the JCSU ground game netted negative two yards on 28 attempts.

The Rams however, netted 400 yards on the ground on 59 attempts, as a pair of Ram running backs would tally over 140 yards each.

Jed Bines (Fr./RB/5'10"/200/Winston-Salem, NC) turned in his third straight solid performance as he earned 145 yards on 13 carries and scored a touchdown. CIAA Offensive Back of the Week, Martin Hicks, would score three times and earn 143 yards on 23 carries, sitting out the majority of the fourth quarter.

The Ram offense was not the only impressive factor in the game as the WSSU defense would record four sacks on the day and hold the Golden Bulls to only a mere 128 yards of total offense. Leading the way for the Rams was, once again, sophomore sensation, Anthony Robinson (So./DL/6'3"/230/Winston-Salem, NC) as he tallied 12 total tackles (7 solo, 5 assisted) and recorded 3 sacks.

The first quarter was relatively eventless as WSSU would manage only a field goal, of the 37 yard variety courtesy of Ashton Oakley (Sr./K/5'10"/175/Haw River, NC).

However the Rams would put 14 points on the board in each of the second and third quarters, as well as tacking on an additional touchdown in the fourth quarter en route to the victory.

With the game's outcome not in question, he Rams knelt on the ball with one minute remaining in the game while sitting on the JCSU 6-yard line, to finish the game with class.

The 14,571 fans in attendance were more than happy with the outcome of the contest as the Rams improve to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in the CIAA. The Rams will close out the season next weekend in Winston-Salem, NC as they host the biggest surprise of the CIAA football season, the St. Augustine's College Falcons in the final game of the season for both teams. Game time is slated for a 2:00 pm kickoff.
