Ram Football Defeats Livingstone College 31-21 In Season's Final Home Game

Oct. 9, 2004

Final Stats |  Quotes

Winston-Salem, NC - The Winston-Salem State University football team gave the 2,200 fans in attendance Saturday night at Bowman-Gray Stadium something that the 18,000 plus fans did not get last weekend at homecoming...a win. The Rams easily defeated the Livingstone College Blue Bears 31-21 to improve to 2-5 on the season (2-2 CIAA) behind a solid running game that racked up 338 yards in the game.

The Rams would score on their opening drive as place-kicker Matt Hind (Jr./Clemmons, NC) booted the longest field goal in WSSU history, a 53-yarder to give the Rams an early 3-0 lead, capping a nine-play, 31-yard drive with 10:30 left in the first quarter of play.

The field goal would not be the Rams' only points of the quarter as WSSU got a one-yard touchdown run from running back Jed Bines (So./Winston-Salem, NC) with only 36 seconds left on the clock to give the Rams a 10-0 lead. The touchdown put the finishing touches on a three-play, 20-yard drive that took only 1:16.

Despite the two teams battling it out for the next 15 minutes of play, neither team would crack into the scoring column and halftime would come with the Rams holding onto the ten-point edge.

The Blue Bears would go to the locker room searching for their offense as they were able to earn only three first downs in the half, with the first of them coming with 9:23 remaining in the second quarter.

Tony Robinson And The Rams Used A Physical Game To Get A Win

The second half of play was more of the same as the Ram running game ran over, around, and through the Blue Bears defense. Not even All-CIAA, and potential All-American Moises Gordon could contain the Ram running duo of Jed Bines and Martin Hicks. Gordon would rack up 16 tackles in the contest, but not before Hicks and Bines tallied 301 yards and four touchdowns between them.

The Blue Bears would not roll over and play dead for the Rams in the second half as they scored 21 points in the loss, cutting their deficit to as little as ten points with 8:43 remaining in the fourth quarter after David Melton capped a 15-play, 75-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run.

Fans in attendance saw 17 seniors play in their last game at Bowman-Gray Stadium, and also saw the Rams get a big win. With the victory the Rams improve to 2-5 overall (2-2 CIAA) while the Blue Bears fall to 2-5 overall (2-3 CIAA). WSSU returns to action next weekend as they travel to Raleigh, NC to take on the Eagles of North Carolina Central University. Kickoff is slated for 6:00 pm at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.
