WINSTON-SALEM, NC - WSSU football fans can get out their planners as Winston-Salem State University has announced its 2011 football schedule. The schedule will feature a full slate of challenging opponents and some exciting match-ups when the Rams take the field this fall. The schedule will include a challenging schedule of Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) competition as well as a pair of strong non-conference opponents.
The Rams will get the season off to a fast start with three straight CIAA road games. The Rams will open the season at Elizabeth City State, followed by a road trip to Richmond, Virginia to take on the Virginia Union Panthers. Finally, the Rams will close out the road streak with a game at Chowan in Murfreesboro, N.C.
The Rams will open home field on September 24th when the team takes on the rival Fayetteville State Broncos in the Hall of Fame game at Bowman-Gray Stadium, followed by the 2011 Homecoming game against the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls. After a pair of road games at Saint Augustine's and at nearby Livingstone before returning home for an October 22nd game against Edward Waters.
The 2011 schedule will also feature a number of special events. The Rams' match-up against the Fayetteville State Broncos will be the annual Hall of Fame game as WSSU honors the class of 2011 inductees into the C.E. Gaines Athletic Hall of Fame. The Rams will also host the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls in their Homecoming game on October 1st. WSSU will also host its second annual Bike Rally, Community Day, and Sponsor Appreciation day.
WSSU fans will want to circle the date on the Rams' October 29th Senior Day game against the Shaw Bears in a game that is a rematch of last season's classic contest, a game that knocked the Rams out of contention for the 2010 CIAA Southern Division championship. The Rams will close out the 2011 regular season at UNC-Pembroke.
