Winston-Salem, NC - The Fayetteville State University men's golf team fired a CIAA-best 317 on Monday afternoon at the Winston-Lake Golf Club in Winston-Salem, NC as they finished the first of two days of competition in first place as they look poised to capture the 2005 CIAA Western Division Golf Invitational Championship.
The Broncos were paced by I. Milne who shot a 70 on the afternoon as he recorded a 37 on the front nine and a 33 on the back. He led a pair of Broncos who shot in the 70's as teammate J. DeCarlos shot a 77 on the day.
North Carolina Central University sits 28 strokes back of the tournament-leading Broncos as the Eagles turned in an aggregate score of 345. M. Clayton led a trip of Eagles who shot in the 80's as he recorded an 80.
The Rams of Winston-Salem State sit in fourth place after the first day as the Rams turned in a 393 as Brett Lindquist recorded a team-best 82 on the days as he shot a 42 on the front nine and a 40 on the back.
Nine CIAA schools are participating in the event as the field includes the Broncos, the Rams and Eagles as well as Saint Paul's College, Johnson C. Smith University, Elizabeth City State, Virginia Union University, Saint Augustine's College and Shaw University.
All nine teams will take to the course at 11:00 AM on Tuesday morning as they will complete the invitational's second and final round.
