S.C. State Leads After Day One Of WSSU Invitational; Rams Sit In Third - WINSTON-SALEM STATE OFFICIAL ATHLETIC SITE

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Winston-Salem State University men's golf team posted a team aggregate total of 348 on Monday afternoon at Winston-Lake Golf Course as the Rams completed first-round action of the 2008 WSSU Golf Invitational with a third-place finish. The Bulldogs of South Carolina State University lead the five-team tournament with a team total of 328 as the teams prepare for Tuesday's final-round action.

The Rams posted a 348 on Monday afternoon as they were led by Jerrell Fields who turned in a team-low round of 80 as he completed the par 71, 6,214-yard course with a round of nine over par as he finished round one action in sixth place.

Steven Mason fired an 87; Kenneth Lathan shot an 89; Lance Holmes turned in a scorecard with a round of 91; and Joshua Sherrill posted a 93 on the day as the Rams completed the course with a team total of 64-over par, 248.

Zachary Yelder posted a round of 87 as an unattached individual as he is only eligible for individual medalist honors and his score is not included in the Rams' team total.

South Carolina State University leads after 18 holes of play with a 44-over par 328 with Hampton University sitting in second place with a 62-over par score of 346, only two strokes ahead of the host-team Rams.

North Carolina Central University sits in fourth place with a team score of 389 with Johnson C. Smith University rounding out the five-team tournament with a team score of 390.

Enobong Udo of Johnson C. Smith University leads the individual medalist portion of the 25-player event with a first round score of 76, only five over par.

Chris Winters of North Carolina Central trails Udo by only one stroke with a score of 77 and Cory Jozefiak of South Carolina State University trails Udo by two strokes with a score of 78 as they sit in the silver and bronze medalist positions after day one, respectively.

All five teams return to action on Tuesday from Winston-Lake Golf Course in Winston-Salem, NC as final-round action tees off at 9:00 a.m.
