ETOWAH, N.C. - The weather was overcast and scattered showers dampened the course at the Etowah Valley Country Club as 86 golfers representing 15 colleges and universities teed off for the first round of the Aramark Independent Collegiate Invitational hosted by Brevard College. Western Carolina University’s Rylan Lanham led the entire field on day one, shooting a first round 3-under par 69 as he was the only golfer to shoot in the 60’s. WSSU’s Jerell Fields sits in a three-way tie for 64th place with a first round 81.
Grant Carnie and Bret McGaughey each shot a 70 to tie for second after day one, leading the host team Brevard College Tornados to a 291, three strokes ahead of Barton College (294) for the overall first round team lead.

Matthew Barnes (Birmingham Southern) and Jonathan Burke (Barton) also were under par after the first round, with both players carding a one-under par 71.
Carson-Newman College, led by Brad Robinson's first round 73, sits in third at 298. With a first round aggregate total of 301, Wingate, and the University of Montevallo with a team total of 302, complete the top five teams after day one.
Winston-Salem State’s Devin Cherry turned in a round of 85, good enough to place him in a tie for 75th place with teammate Kenny Lathan after 18 holes of collegiate golf action.
Steven Mason fired an 86 while Michel Asbury carded a round of 90 as WSSU’s team-total of 337 earned the Rams a 13th place finish in the 14-team field after day one, 41 strokes ahead of Lees-McRae College who turned in a total of 378.
Weather permitting, the second round of the Aramark Independent Collegiate Invitational will begin at 8 a.m. from the par-72, 6,796-yard Etowah Valley Country Club.
