ETOWAH, N.C. – Weather shortened the Aramark Independent Collegiate Invitational on Tuesday afternoon as two days of constant rain forced several holes to become unplayable, cancelling the final day of the tournament. As a result, Brevard College took home the team trophy as tournament champions, shooting a 291 to finish three strokes ahead of Barton College. Individually, Western Carolina's Rylan Lanham took home individual medalist honors, carding a 3-under, 69 for the tournament.

The steady rain showers dampened the course at the Etowah Valley Country Club as 86 golfers representing 15 colleges and universities were able to play only one round at the Aramark Independent Collegiate Invitational hosted by Brevard College.

As a result of the rain Western Carolina University’s Rylan Lanham’s three-under par round of 69 helped him emerge as the only golfer to shoot in the 60’s.  WSSU’s Jerell Fields finished in a three-way tie for 64th place with a round of 81.

Grant Carnie and Bret McGaughey each shot a 70 to tie for second place.

Matthew Barnes (Birmingham Southern) and Jonathan Burke (Barton) also were under par for the tournament with both players carding a one-under par 71.

Carson-Newman College, led by Brad Robinson's round of 73 finished third with a total of 298. With an aggregate total of 301, Wingate, and the University of Montevallo with a team total of 302, rounded out the top five team finishers.

Winston-Salem State’s Devin Cherry turned in an 85, good enough to place him in a tie for 75th place with teammate Kenny Lathan.

Steven Mason fired an 86 while Michel Asbury carded a round of 90 as WSSU’s team-total of 337 earned the Rams a 13th place finish in the 14-team field, 41 strokes ahead of Lees-McRae College who turned in a total of 378.

The Rams return to action May 7-10 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla. for the 2009 PGA Minority Golf Championships.
