FARMVILLE, Va. – The Winston-Salem State University men’s golf team shot season-opening rounds of 337 and 340 in men’s golf competition for a 36-hole score of 677 to stand in 11th place among 13 teams at the Manor Intercollegiate Golf Tournament hosted by Longwood University being played at the Manor Resort Golf Club in Farmville, Va. on Monday.
Gardner-Webb University is leading the event with its 290-291--581, while Gardner-Webb’s Daniel Kim is the individual leader with his 69-72--141 at the 7,214-yard, par 72 layout course.
WSSU’s Devin Cherry was the Rams’ best individual scorer as he turned in rounds of 78 and 77 en route to a 36-hole total of 155, good enough to earn a tie for 29th position headed into Tuesday’s final round.
Jerrell Fields posted a two-round total of 166 (81-85—166) and freshman sensation Kevin Veach carded a 175 (86-89—175) as the Rams started the 2009-10 season with a solid showing.
Kenneth Lathan posted rounds of 92 and 89 en route to a 74th-place finish after day one action while Steven Mason finished 36 holes with a 186 (92-94—186) for a tie for 77th place.
The Rams sit 36 strokes ahead of MEAC-rival Hampton University who turned in a round of 713 to finish day one action in 13th place.
WSSU returns to action on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. as they play the final 18 holes of tournament competition.
