WSSU Men's Golf Poised For A Return To Action On Sept. 14-15

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University men's golf team will travel to Longwood University on Sunday afternoon as they prepare for the 54-hole Manor Intercollegiate men's golf tournament September 14-15 at The Manor Resort Golf Club. The two-day event opens the 2009-10 campaign for the Rams and features a field of 12 schools, including the defending champion and host Longwood Lancers, along with 2007 champion Gardner-Webb, George Mason, Hampton, High Point, 2009 NCAA Tournament participant Loyola (Md.), Mount St. Mary's, North Carolina Central, Winston-Salem State, Virginia State, Hampden-Sydney, and Virginia Wesleyan along with individuals from Longwood, Virginia, and Liberty. The Manor Intercollegiate at The Manor Resort Golf Club is open to the public with free admission.

The Manor Resort Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course that opened in June 2006 and features bent grass greens, fairways, and tees. The Manor will play 7,214 yards, par 72 during the event. The schedule of events will include practice rounds for the participating schools on Sunday, September 13, starting at 1 p.m., a 36-hole opening day of collegiate golf will take place on Monday, September 14, beginning at 8:30 a.m. before the final round on Tuesday, September 15, starting at 8:30 a.m. as well An awards ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday when competition is completed at approximately 1:30 p.m..

Longwood posted a 54-hole tournament-record score of 864 (287-283-294) to win last year's Manor Intercollegiate. The Lancers finished 17 shots in front of Murray State University (881), the second-place team among 11 schools, while junior Michael Young/Oakville, Ontario (Oakville Trafalgar) took individual medalist honors among the field of 58 with his record-tying 72-68-73--213. Young was followed closely by sophomore Kenny Leech/Boca Raton, Fla. (Grandview Prep) (74-71-70--215, t-2nd) and senior Adam Webb/Ridgeway (Magna Vista) (72-74-72--218, 5th).

The 2009-10 edition of the Rams features a talented squad comprised of three sophomores, a pair of juniors and two seniors that will lead head coach Robert Bethea's squad into competition.
 

 

"With our younger guys having another year of experience, our student-athletes have matured into great leaders for us. We have a very talented team and I think that this is the season where we make a large impact on the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference" head coach Robert Bethea commented.

The Rams will travel to Farmville, Va. on Sunday for a practice round before beginning the two-day competition on Monday and Tuesday.
