WINSTON-SALEM, NC -- Winston-Salem State's men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Norfolk State University Saturday at the University courts on the WSSU campus.
The Rams fought hard, but could not get by the MEAC 's Norfolk State Spartans.
Leandro Imaz battled NSU's Igor Braga to three sets (2-6, 6-1, 6-10) before bowing out, as did the Rams' Creighton Jones, who lost in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 3-10.
In double competition, the #1 team of Calvin Brooks and Drew Dunzweiler lost to Norfolk State's Ben Marks and Arsenio Culver, 0-8, while Leandro Imaz and Nick John lost 8-5 to NSU's Igor Braga and Shaheed Mourillon. Chris jeter and Creighton Jones lost 2-8, to Christian Romanzini and Roosevelt Cooper.
"It was a tough match on both sides," says John Martin, WSSU head coach. "With the men, two matches went to 3rd sets so the score could have been easily 7-2 instead of 9-0. It's still early in the season and we're working out the kinks. The goal of this non-conference schedule, early on, is to prepare us for our conference and regional matches in hopes of winning the CIAA, and advancing to the NCAA tournament again," says Martin.
"It's still early, and we (the coaching staff), are happy with the effort we're seeing. We're not where we want to be, but we're getting there," added Martin.
The Rams will face the Elon Pheonix on February 25th in Elon, NC.
