WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (3-1) gave it all they had, but the team fell just short in a tough 5-4 loss to the West Liberty Hilltoppers (4-1), Saturday afternoon. After taking a pair of doubles losses, the Rams rallied in singles play to tie the match but the team could not get over the hump in the loss.
The Rams opened the day with a 1-2 effort in doubles play. The tandem of WSSU freshman Corey Bonnette and sophomore Josh Aubrey took home the sole WSSU win, 8-3. The team rallied in a big with three singles wins to tie the match, 4-4. Bonnette took a 6-3, 4-6, and 6-2 singles win while Aubrey added a 6-1, 6-1 win. Junior Creighton Jones rounded out the WSSU effort with a 6-7, 7-6, and 6-1 singles win. However, West Liberty would take the match with a win in the #6 singles.
The loss ended the Rams' three-game streak to open the season. The team will return to action next week when the team heads to Hilton Head, S.C. next week to take on the Shepherd Rams, Tuesday.
