Personal: Head tennis coach Leon Kay has been an integral part of the Winston-Salem State University athletic staff since 1993 and as the saying goes, "wears many hats"...He holds dual coaching positions as Head Coach of not only the men's and women's tennis programs but of the women's bowling program as well...Kay has also served as the assistant coach for the WSSU women's basketball program in the past...He is the president of the CIAA Tennis Coach's Association and serves on the regional advisory committee and ranking committee for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), which is the NCAA operating arm for collegiate tennis...In addition to his coaching duties, Kay also works as a special assistant to WSSU Director of Athletics, Dr. Chico Caldwell...Some of his duties include, but are not limited to, coaching and mentoring student-athletes, assisting with game day operations, as well as performing various other administrative details within the athletic department...Prior to arriving at WSSU, he was a coach and trainer for some the state, nation, and world's most elite tennis players...He has served on the board of the North Carolina Commission on the Status of Women, as well as serving on the board of the American Tennis Association...Was a founding member of the Southeaster Racquet Association, as well as being a founding member of the East Winston Community Development Corporation...Was a board member of the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership as well as being a member of the board of directors of the Kimberly Park Tennis Club...Presently he serves on the board of directors of the Experiment in Self-Reliance Inc...Mr. Kay attended North Carolina A & T State University, Winston-Salem State University, the Van de Meer Tennis University, and the North Carolina Institute of Political Leadership...He is a certified tennis professional as well as being a certified tennis referee and umpire...Mr. Kay resides in Winston-Salem, NC.
